Frequently Asked Questions
About Our Products
What makes your soap different from other natural soaps?
Every bar starts with a goat milk base enriched with shea butter and jojoba oil, then we add our own scent profiles — which we build from scratch using individual essential oils. We don’t buy pre-made fragrance blends. Every scent is our original formulation, mixed by hand, and added at precise temperatures to preserve the full aromatic profile.
Are your products organic?
We use natural, high-quality ingredients but we do not carry an organic certification at this time. Our focus is on ingredient quality, formula integrity, and transparent sourcing rather than certification labels. Every ingredient in every product is listed on our Safety & Ingredients page.
Do you use synthetic fragrances?
Never. Every scent in our line is built from pure essential oils, resins, oleoresins, and botanical extracts. No fragrance oils, no aroma chemicals, no synthetics of any kind.
What is a CSP?
CSP stands for Concentrated Scent Profile. It’s our standardized scent blend system. Each scent we make has a fixed formula, a fixed mixing order, and a version number. This is how we ensure consistency — a bar of Cottage Comfort you buy today will smell the same as one you buy six months from now.
Are your products tested on animals?
No. We do not test on animals and never will. Our products are tested on ourselves, our families, and willing friends who know what they’re signing up for.
About Specific Products
Does Swamp Slayer actually repel insects?
Swamp Slayer contains essential oils with well-documented insect-repellent properties, including lemon eucalyptus, citronella, lemongrass, and catnip. We developed it because we live in coastal Georgia and needed something that worked without smelling like a chemical plant. That said, it’s a botanical product, not an EPA-registered repellent, and we don’t make guaranteed protection claims.
What’s the difference between Swamp Slayer and the upcoming Smokehouse Field?
Swamp Slayer is pure utility — maximum functional insect-defense ingredients, green and herbal, designed to work. Smokehouse Field is something we’re developing as its premium sibling — a wearable field cologne that will still have functional bite but leads with cedarwood, vetiver, and black pepper rather than the harder repellent notes. Think of it as the difference between work boots and nice boots that can still handle mud. It’s in development now and we’ll announce it when it’s ready.
My skin does better with gentler products. Which deodorant should I try?
Ask us about our Gentle formula, made with magnesium hydroxide instead of baking soda. It’s a milder option that still helps manage everyday odor. If you’re not sure where to start, try Gentle Clarity in the Gentle formula — it’s our cleanest, most universally comfortable scent.
Can I use your sprays on my body?
Our room and linen sprays (like Dewfall Cedar Garden) are formulated and labeled for room and linen use. Our Swamp Slayer field spray is designed for outdoor personal use. If you have any concerns, review the specific product ingredients on our Safety & Ingredients page or contact us.
About Leather Works
What is Black Sapling Leather Works?
Leather Works is the next branch of Black Sapling Studios. We’re developing a line of handcrafted leather goods — functional, durable pieces designed for daily carry and real use. Not fashion accessories. Tools that age well and work hard. We’re in the development phase now and will announce our first pieces when they’re ready.
When will Leather Works products be available?
We don’t have a launch date yet. We’d rather take the time to get it right than rush something out that doesn’t meet the standard. If you want to be the first to know, sign up on our Leather Works page and we’ll notify you when the first pieces drop.
What kind of leather products will you make?
Functional daily-carry goods — think wallets, journal covers, tool rolls, and utility pieces. Everything will be designed with the same philosophy as the rest of Black Sapling Studios: handcrafted, built with intention, made to last years rather than months. Specific products will be announced as we finalize designs.
