About Black Sapling Studios
Black Sapling Studios started the way most honest things do — with a problem that needed solving and a refusal to settle for what was already on the shelf.
The soaps at the store smelled like a factory. The deodorants either burned or quit by noon. The books on the nightstand were written by people who’d never gotten their hands dirty. And the gear in the catalogs was either flimsy fashion or overbuilt tactical nonsense that nobody actually carries into a real day’s work.
So we started making our own. First it was soap — goat milk bars with scent profiles we actually wanted to wear. Then deodorant that worked without wrecking your skin. Then salves for hands that do real work. Then a bug spray that didn’t smell like a hardware store aisle.
Somewhere along the way, the workshop became a studio. The notebook became a manuscript. The hobby became a system. And the system became Black Sapling Studios.
What We Are
We are a small-batch maker’s workshop and creative studio. We sit at the intersection of three things we believe belong together: handcrafted goods, honest writing, and practical knowledge.
The Apothecary produces our botanical product line — premium soaps, deodorants, salves, and sprays, each built on original scent formulations and standardized production systems. Every product is made by hand in small batches. Every formula is versioned, tested, and traceable.
The publishing side — books, essays, field notes — is where the thinking happens in public. We write about homesteading, land skills, the natural world, and the kind of quiet self-reliance that doesn’t need to perform for a camera.
The leather bench produces functional, durable goods designed for daily carry and real use.
All three branches grow from the same root: a belief that the things you use every day should be made with intention, and the people who make them should be willing to tell you exactly how and why.
What We’re Building
Black Sapling Studios is more than our own work. We’re building toward something bigger — a place where other makers, writers, and homesteaders can find an audience and a home.
We want to carry other people’s handcrafted goods in our shop. We want to publish other people’s writing through our press. We want to create educational content that actually teaches people real skills — not just aesthetic inspiration, but the kind of knowledge that changes how you live.
The sapling on our logo isn’t just us. It’s the idea that small things, rooted well, grow into something that shelters more than just the person who planted them.
